MITIMCO Mudhens 21, Catfish 10
Dear Catfish and Friends,
The score makes it seem like it was an easy game for the Mudhens, but that is not so! We put up a very good fight, and at the end of the 1st inning we were leading, 2-1. At the end of the 6th inning, it was tied 6-6! Then, they scored 8 runs in the third, while we scored none, and we never fully recovered from that crappy outing. But there were highlights, as always, of course.
Greg led off the game with an auspicious single that turned into a double when their shortstop threw wildly to first. Then Evan got yet another big fat home run!! The man is on fire!! John Costello was agressive as usual in his baserunning, forcing a triple in inning 2, and in the 5th, on a swinging bunt, he made it all the way to third again, scraping up his leg in a beautiful slide into second base in the process! Ryan got a nice catch in foul territory, making 2 of the 3 outs in the 4th. Steve had a very nice catch in the outfield, at some point during the game. Fine pitching as always by Kate, and by Matt Abbate in his glorious return to the team this season, and also by Greg in the final inning. Many other beautiful moments, too many to mention, but feel free to share your memories, hopes, and dreams on our blog. I'll be quite interested as always to see Evan's postgame analysis.
Also it should be noted, your humble captain was WRONG, we have indeed played this team before. And they were tough then, too. But we had higher hopes this time, perhaps because that team we beat a few weeks ago, the Fowl Swingers, were said to have beaten these Mudhens by 1 run. So we were all set for a big victory. Well, we'll have to shake it off, and look ahead to next week, when we play Langer Lab back on the astroturf. By that time we'll all have our batting songs to inspire us even further!
Hang in there, Fish!

Shadowmasks team analysis
Like Mike Vrabel and Tedy Bruschi, the once terribly mighty Shadowmasks have grown slightly feebler with age. They still have a few big hitter guys but there were a lot more of the Shadowmeek than we've seen before. Can Catfish salivate? If so, please begin, for this is the year we unmask the Shadowmasks. Hitherto:
1) They still have that super-pull lefty on their team. As Nathan successfully discovered, if you play deep on the right field line the guy will not hit it much anywhere else. I do know he can poke it to left field once in awhile, so keep an eye out.
2) Their outfield and infield defense is adequate, so not a lot to be gained there.
3) The athletic-looking guys are truly athletic, so despite a relatively calm day at the plate it is possible they'll bring it harder next time.
4) Most of these guys are pretty quick, so even though it looks tempting to throw home (ahem) or to the next base, it would be wise to let them take the base to prevent overthrows.
5) The lone woman on the team has a pretty good approach to the plate.
6) The lone moustachioed bat flinging guy is the one the catchers need to watch out for.
Honestly, aside from a few good hits from them and an error here and there from us, they didn't have anything to be worried about. Holding them to doubles or less, keeping the ball in the glove (two hands!) and playing safe defense to keep runs to a minimal will get the Catfish to prevail the next time we see them.
I also think it's time we give props to the lineup and defense guy(s) on the team. Is it Marc or John or both? Either way, people seem to be confident in their positions and the lineup has nicely distributed the singles and doubles hitters to provide Maximum Catfish Impact (tm). It also helps to have more than 2 at bats a game, yes?
Enjoy the bye week, Catfish!

Catfish 16, Shadowmasks 18
Dear Catfish and Friends,
It was a hard-fought battle last night. And we Fish are quite rightfully proud of our performance.
Of course, these Shadow Masks didn't seem quite like the Shadow Masks of yesteryear. They all seemed like quite nice people, especially their pitcher. And they didn't argue when we pointed out (Thank you, Evan!) that the overthrown ball that tumbled into the gaggle of soccer players was in fact a dead ball, and so they couldn't just keep on running home until the bases were cleared. But the real difference, I think, is in us Fish. In fact, we seem to be a whole New Kettle of Fish these days! Our fielding especially has vastly improved. Though everyone had their little flub-ups last night, each of us also showed our indispensability to the impenetrable wall that is Fish. Just a few highlights, this time: Nathan Hohenstein had a beautiful catch in right field, and Butters had a great snag at SS to end the first inning; Diane Denner hit a key single and got an RBI in the top of the 7th, as did Erin Hasley; Greg Dokshin also had a key triple with RBI in that last inning. Our best offensive inning was the 5th, where we scored 6 runs: David Weininger had a double, Charles Hale, Erin, and Greg had singles, Buters had a double, John Costello had a triple, and Evan Mauser hit his obligatory home run. (For anyone who's counting that's his 3rd home run in as many straight games. We're now in conversation to renegotiate his contract so that he receives more free pitchers of beer at the Muddy, to better reflect his status as Big Gun--not to mention game and strategy analyst.)
We've got a bye next week, so our next game isn't until Wednesday, June 17. It will be against the MITIMCO Mudhens. I don't think we've met them before, but just wait 'til they meet us! Go Fish!
