Fish and Friends,
Double headers are no one’s favorite thing, especially not on a field where the grass is like hay and you can’t see the bases, and you’re playing the Akamites are who really more like a mountain of beefcake with a hundred arms sticking out in all directions that can rob you of your proudest and mightiest smashy-smashy hits. Still, as always the Fish rose to the occasion, scoring a total of 7 whole runs against that beefcake mountain.
The date was an important one: May 23, the birthday of our biggest fan, The Laughing Man Laughlin. (If you are reading this, Laughing Man: We won! In our hearts, in a sense, or something, but happy birthday.) Our bats were explosive, with Na-Slam-Well Trippe starting things off early with a home run, followed soon by Tslammy Tsai. Jon “Butters” Elwell was robbed of some hits but also had a glorious triple, for which we Fish were deeply grateful. Raucous Richard shone at 3rd base, making pretty much every out in the 2nd inning of Game 2. Jamie “The Jamiable” was able to return to us, and made his signature diving catch with skinned-up knee combo. Nate “JAG!” Band was back in rare form, hitting well and covering the vast outfield. Christopher “Pants on Fire” Eyer did well stretching himself at 1st base (when the rare occasion arose, since the beefcake mountain mostly hit things far into the outfield) and also was robbed of a beauty of a hit that was just foul by a centimeter. Yar “Mr. Tatty Tats!” had another fine evening of hits, and Erin “The Hustling H-Bomb” Hasley was put to the test, chasing after all kinds of pop-ups behind the plate. The Abbates were in their usual fine form, with Matt The Baffler pitching patiently against that beefcake mountain, and John The Battler making fine plays at 2nd base (no small feat in the aforementioned hay-like grass). We were also joined by The Battler’s colleague in cahoots, the Mighty Amile, who had some fabulous hits as well.
We were cheered on by none other than our shortstop in training, Ferocious John Robley Elwell, pictured here for your viewing pleasure. He’s an elusive one and didn’t hang around long, which only served to intensify our fascination with him. We sure hope to see him again soon!
All in well, nothing to sneeze at Fish! Swim tall and proud, and look forward to our next game, which is Monday, June 6, vs. Langer Lab on Field 5.
Yours in softball enthusiasm,
Judy/Capn Batty
