Catfish Nation,
We were all fired up last night to stomp all over ChemE Bound and Down, whom we beat in our season opener (so far we are the only team who’s beat these beasts!), but things didn’t turn out quite as planned. They started off strong and our bats were sleepy. But we came roaring back in the bottom of the 3rd and held them to only 3 runs in the top of the 4th. As always the moments of Fish pride were uncountably many, but highlights include Pickles Picazio’s numerous catches in the outfield, Jon Butters Elwell’s dashing double play somewhere in the middle of the game and his obligatory home run (Buttaazzzz!!), Chrazy Eye “Stretch” Eyer’s nigh-gumbylike ability to stretch himself out to any length called for to make the out at 1st (and single-handedly making all 3 outs in the top of the 4th), and John “The Younger Baffler” Abbate’s debut as closing pitcher.
All of us had our shiny Fishy moments, of course: Evan The Beast thrilled us with his now-familiar aggressive base-running; Na-Slam-Well Trippe returned to us and got at least 2 singles and scored at least 1 run; Nate The Great Lawyerator was back in fine form, getting a double and an RBI; “Hot Stuff” José wowed us at the plate, making his triumphant return from a long hiatus after shoulder surgery; Levi “Agent Orange Pants” Rubeck was incremental making numerous outs at 2nd, and I recall his being robbed of many fine hits; Richie Rich Wladkowski was robbed of 2 hits but still managed at least one single; and H Bomb Hasley was fierce both behind and at the plate, as always, doing especially well managing the young Baffler’s closing debut.
Ultimately, our bats were too snoozy this time around. Even our fabulous fans couldn’t rouse us. Some say our bats had feasted upon a little too much deliciousness at that afternoon’s Taste of the MIT Press and were in an eech-induced haze; others postulate that we were confused and disoriented by playing on a grass field, after playing our first 3 games on the much superior Women’s Softball Diamond. Ultimately the truth may never be known. But the one truth we can all agree on is that we gave them what for and have nothing to hang our Fish heads about.
Please join us next week, July 2, back on that same grass field, when we face the Strawdogs.
Happy weekends to all!
Judy
