Hello Fish and Friends,

It was a rough game last night against the Pitch Slappers. The team itself is a very sportsmanlike and polite one. But they sure can slap those pitches out through the ozone layer.

The game was painful not only literally but metaphorically. Marc “M Lo” Lowenthal took a bad tumble while leaping for one of those balls in the outfield, breaking his collarbone in the process. Please join me in wishing him and his magical clavicle a speedy and restful recovery.

Despite the pain there was joy, just as we had both rain and sunshine. Jon “Butters” Elwell had many sweet snags at short stop, and he slapped a pitch into the stratosphere himself, getting us on the board in the bottom of the 2nd. Really everyone hit well, though some of us waz robbed. Nathan “The Lawyerator” Band made it to base, as did Kate “The Scalding née Caldwell” Ellwell, Rich “Richie Rich” Wladkowski, Matthew “The Baffler” Abbate (who also pitched supremely and displayed creative base-running techniques), Katie “The Personable” Persons (who also had some nice snags at 3rd base), and Erin “The H Bomb” Hasley. Beth “The Mórrígan” Moore  displayed much hustle in the outfield, as did John “The Abbatoirist” Abbate in short field. (Perhaps everyone made it to base, if so please correct me!)

As you can see we were a lean team, just 10 of us after M Lo made his exit, and we were once again stuck at 5 runs (our magical number from last year). It will be a rebuilding year for the Fish, as we’ve lost several core players: Katie “HellieKat” Helke to distant lands, Andrew “Sweetie Pie” Sweet to a pesky rotator cuff, John “Tslammy” Tsai to woeful back woes, Evan “The Maus Beast” Mauser to the land of adorable babies (though he does plan to join us this year), John “@butchie007” Costello to retirement, and now it looks like Marc “The Magical Clavicle” Lowenthal will also be out for the season, if not the rest of his softball career.

Nevertheless, we Fish will soldier fishily on, and we shall meet our next enemy with our heads held as high as a Catfish can. No game next week; please join us on June 2 when we face our old pals the Whybunts on the Women’s Softball Diamond.
