Fish in Fine Fettle vs. Whybunts: Win One, Lose One

Dear Catfish and Friends,

The Fish were in fine fettle against those wiliest of the wily Whybunts. Whybunts have a secret weapon, an evil mastermind who goes by the name of “Allison.” We have reason to believe she has hacked into our Impenetrable Blog of Fish to learn our fish secrets. She tried to flap us with taunts regarding Oxford commas and suchlike, but we Fish remained unflappable.

As you can  see we took a little time to find our groovy groove; our bats were reticent in game 1. But we came alive in game 2, despite Whybunts’ wiliest efforts to keep us down. We were again down a few players: Nate the Lawyerator Band was off chillin with the in-laws; Helliekat was in a flower-filled London pub, sipping on draught cider; Chrazy Eyes was off spreading the Curmudgeonly Word in Canada. We were even missing our stalwart scorekeeper, Kate Scorewell-Scaldwell-Pitchwell-Elwell. At least Butter-Pat Jon Elwell was back, making his triumphant return as shortstop after a much-deserved rest on the Cape. Countless highlights, as always, including Butters’s out-of-the-park homerun; Richie Rich’s stupendous catch in right field; Levi’s clutch hitting in the top of the 5th, scoring 2 RBIs with 2 outs (when asked by reporters afterward how he’d dealt with the presh, he responded “Whaaaaaatt?”); JC Superstar Costello’s blammo double (and his rhyming skills to come up with the end-of-game cheer, which sadly I can’t remember—Fish, please enlighten me); Evan the Beast’s two courageous catches in left field in the bottom of the 3rd; Na-Slam-Well the Terrific Trippe’s beautiful batting and base running; John Tsunami Tslammy Tsai’s fabulous pitching and hitting, and catching of a pop-up; Hot Stuff José’s ferocity at the plate; Matt the Baffler Abbate’s pitching, back after a stint on the DL (back); H Bomb Hasley’s aplomb at and behind the plate; John The Abbatoirst Abbate’s trying his hand swimmingly at 1st; the defiant debut of rookie the Mighty  Amile; Yaaarchitect Laakso’s determination at the plate and out in center and right fields; and last, but certainly not least, Jamie Le Jamiable’s game-ending catch on the run in the bottom of the 5th with bases loaded, to foil the Whybunts’ last-ditch effort to stymie us, the unstymiable Catfish. We swam happily to victory and to the Muddy where we dined on pizza and beers, as per usual.

Please join us this Thursday when we face the dark wizardry of the Shadow Masks and their good-luck baby. We play on the grassy field BB at 5:30.

Sincerely etc.,

Capn Battay
